VALOREM Group and GOOGLE unveil long-term power purchase agreement to enable new onshore wind generation in Finland

VALOREM Group, an independent renewable energy operator, announces a long-term power purchase agreement or PPA – with Google for 97.3 MW of additional capacity from the Matkussaari wind farm in Finland.

A long-term contract with a balancing responsibility

Today, Google, which has operated in Finland since 2011, announced plans to expand its digital infrastructure in the country alongside both new and historic actions the company is taking to power its operations responsibly and bring new carbon-free energy sources to the Finnish grid.

Google signed ten-year pay-as-produced PPA in 2024 to enable new clean capacity for Finland’s grid. The wind farm project, which has been operational since May 2025, now contributes to a growing secure electricity supply for the country. This agreement also supports the VALOREM Group’s strategy as an independent renewable energy producer and demonstrates its long-term commitment to the Finnish market.

Located in Kurikka, South Ostrobothnia, the Matkussaari wind farm is owned and operated by the VALOREM Group and has a total installed capacity of 148.5 MW. It comprises 27 Nordex N163 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 5.5 MW. Together with the Kalistanneva wind farm (owned by HELEN and Ålandsbanken), Matkussaari forms part of the 313.5 MW VIIATTI project. Inaugurated in August 2025, VIIATTI is the largest wind power plant ever built by the VALOREM Group.

Google has been proud to call Finland home for the past 15 years, and we’ve engaged closely with local energy developers to add new clean energy supply to the grid. This PPA with VALOREM brings our total contracted renewable capacity in Finland to 629MW and demonstrates we’re committed to doing our part to accelerate Finland’s ongoing transition to decarbonised, secure electricity sources. As we grow our footprint in Finland, bringing new clean capacity online will continue to be a key part of our long-term strategy to ensure access to affordable, clean energy for our Finnish neighbors and customers.
Aris Karcanias Director Clean Energy and Power EMEA at Google

Google and VALOREM have worked together to provide ancillary services in response to increased pressure on Finland’s electricity reserve markets that enable the wind farm to supply renewable electricity to consumers more flexibly depending on local power system needs, thereby contributing to the stability and reliability of the Finnish electricity grid.

VALOREM is working towards the decarbonised electrification of Finland

With its abundant renewable energy resources, Finland is strategically positioned to play a leading role in the transformation of the European energy system. Carbon-free electricity generation will be essential to support the electrification of industry and heating, the development of renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels and the decarbonisation of district heating networks. It is also a key factor in strengthening European digital sovereignty. The development of data centres and digital infrastructure in Finland is creating new demand for low-carbon electricity that is available locally and over the long term.

With a project portfolio under development totalling more than  2.3 GW combined with  its expertise in energy management, the VALOREM Group aims to make an active contribution to Finland’s energy transition and digital sovereignty.

Finland has considerable renewable resources and an environment that is particularly conducive to the electrification of the economy. This PPA with Google fully illustrates our ambition in Finland: to generate renewable, local and competitive electricity, whilst playing our part in ensuring the smooth operation of the electricity grid. The long-term visibility provided by this agreement reduces our market exposure and strengthens our ability to finance new projects.
With our portfolio of projects under development, we are well-placed to provide long-term support to energy companies, manufacturers and digital sector players seeking to secure their supply of renewable and competitive electricity.
Minna Jukola Country Manager at VALOREM Finland Oy

VALOREM would also like to thank their advisers, Our New Energy, for their support in finalising this PPA.
